"It’s an amazing feeling to help people."
Fui volunteers with Royal Voluntary Service at the charity’s café and trolley service in the Royal Sussex County Hospital. In the midst of her retirement, Fui was looking for a meaningful way to enrich her days by contributing to her community. Drawing on her past experience working in a charity shop, Fui was eager to find a role that would allow her to make a positive impact and give back to others, and so when she discovered the perfect opportunity at her local hospital, she was quick to sign up and begin volunteering.
In this role, Fui and her fellow volunteers offer hot and cold drinks, healthy meals and treats, as well as a warm welcome and a friendly face from behind the counters. Pushing the trolley around wards, Fui offers patients who can’t make it to the hospital shop or café, refreshments, reading materials, toiletries, healthy treats and a much-appreciated chance to chat.
Expressing her delight in finding the perfect role, Fui shared, "This is the perfect role for me. I am retired, but I still want a way to stay active and connect with others. I have really enjoyed being able to meet new people and learn new skills. It’s an amazing feeling to help people."
Fui highlights the positive atmosphere within her volunteer team, emphasising the support received from both staff and volunteer teammates.
"I am really lucky to have such a supportive team. Both the staff and my fellow volunteers are great and are always happy to help each other out."
Volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service has not only allowed Fui to give back to others but has also provided her with opportunities for personal growth.
"Volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service has been a nice way to Play My Part, give back to others and learn new things."
